THE ARTIFACT: LEGACY STUMP

In a moss-laden clearing, the remains of an old giant stand rooted in the soil—a massive stump, its surface softened by decades of rain, its top crowned with ferns and young saplings. From a distance it appears as a simple silhouette against the muted greens and grays of the forest. But within its dark interior, the surreal double exposure reveals another world: a 1920s logging camp, rendered in muted sepia tones, alive with the energy of its time.
Inside the stump’s silhouette, loggers move across wooden platforms, their silhouettes sharp against plumes of steam and smoke. Sleds creak under the weight of freshly felled trunks. A steam donkey engine vents clouds into the air, cables taut as they drag massive logs along skid roads. The camp feels busy, noisy, and immediate, even though its reality has long since faded.
