THE ARTIFACT: SANDS OF TIME

An hourglass spills storm-gray sand that transforms mid-fall into waves, blending surreal still-life precision with the restless motion of a shifting sea.
Morning fog presses against the windows of a quiet study, softening the edges of everything it touches. On the center table sits an hourglass crafted from dark walnut and polished brass, its form elegant and weighty. But as the eye drifts downward toward the falling sand, the scene shifts. In the spirit of Surreal Still Life, the grains cascading from the upper chamber become storm-colored waves mid-fall—curling, cresting, dissolving into spray before settling into the lower globe like ordinary sand.
The upper chamber holds a swirling gray mass, as if a storm cloud has been trapped behind curved glass. The lower chamber glows faintly with the soft translucence of calm water. Each grain-turned-wave is rendered with painterly precision: tiny white caps form and collapse in fractions of a second, shadows deepen beneath swirling currents, and soft bursts of foam bloom before dissolving into the accumulating layer of sand below. The brass frame catches highlights from the muted morning light, reflecting warped silhouettes of waveforms against its polished bands.
Symbolically, the hourglass becomes a meditation on the passage of time—how calm moments and turbulent ones are inseparable parts of the same flow. Storm and stillness are shown not as opposites, but as transformations of each other. The surreal treatment invites the viewer to consider how life often feels the same: one breath suspended between chaos and clarity, caught in a narrow bottleneck where everything shifts shape as it falls.
