THE ARTIFACT: THE FERN LUNG

A surreal anatomical composition where human lungs are formed entirely from ferns and moss, transforming breath into a living forest system.
Suspended against a softly muted background, the familiar shape of human lungs emerges—not in flesh and tissue, but in fronds and moss. The artwork, rendered in a surreal anatomy style, arranges layers of lush green fern fronds into branching bronchi, each leaflet echoing the structure of alveoli. Moss fills in the spaces between, soft and velvety, suggesting the spongy interior of living organ tissue. Delicate root threads and thin stems trace downward to form the trachea and main branches, connecting the forest “lungs” to an unseen body below.
The greens are rich and varied: deep forest tones in shadowed recesses, fresh spring hues along the upper edges, even hints of yellow-green where new growth would appear. Fine details reveal tiny spores, dew droplets clinging to the undersides of fronds, and subtle veins running along each leaflet. The background remains intentionally simple and atmospheric, like mist or fog, allowing the organic silhouette to stand out with quiet authority. The image is at once anatomical diagram and woodland altar.

Preserving the Artifact
To maintain the integrity of the fiber density and the fidelity of the print, we recommend the following protocol:

• Wash: Machine wash cold with like colors. Turn the garment inside out to protect the artwork.
• Dry: Hang dry is preferred to "cure" the fit. Tumble dry on low if necessary.
• Iron: Never iron the design directly.
