THE FEILD LOG

THE SPECIMEN

Constructed from Architectural Grade Fleece, this hoodie is engineered for sanctuary. It features a generous, relaxed fit with a double-lined hood and heavy-gauge drawcords. The interior offers a plush, brushed finish, creating a wearable shield against the elements.

THE ARTIFACT: THE MATCHES

A vintage box of wooden matches rests ready on a tabletop, its worn label and edges painted with nostalgic stillness and the quiet promise of future flame.
On a small shelf near the woodstove, a box of wooden matches sits in a pool of afternoon light. The cardboard is softened at the corners from years of handling, its vintage label slightly scuffed but still proudly displaying an old emblem—bold typography, a tiny illustrated flame, a hint of faded red and gold. In this Vintage Object Study, the humble box becomes a focal point: the spark before the blaze, the beginning captured in the simplest of forms.
A few matches lie scattered nearby, their pale shafts and colored heads resting on the shelf like slender exclamation points waiting to be written. The grain of the wood beneath them shows faint scorch marks and long-ago soot, evidence of many winters and many fires started right here in this small corner. The light catches the match heads with a subtle matte glow, as if acknowledging the potential they hold to shift the room from cold and dim to warm and alive.
Symbolism crackles quietly through the composition. The box represents potential energy, patient and contained. Each match is a decision yet to be made: light the stove, start the campfire, kindle the lantern that pulls a circle of brightness into a storm-dark cabin. The vintage style underscores the timelessness of this ritual; long before switches and screens, there was friction, sulfur, and the sudden bloom of orange in the dark.

(FINAL ECHO)
As the sun begins to dip, shadow gradually folds across the shelf. The label’s details grow softer, but the simple geometry of the box remains, steady and unassuming. The room cools by a few degrees, as if nudging someone to slide the tray open, take one match, and draw it sharply along the striker’s edge.
The Matches quietly embody the moment before transformation, when warmth and light are waiting just beyond the smallest flick of the wrist.

MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL

Preserving the Artifact
To maintain the integrity of the fiber density and the fidelity of the print, we recommend the following protocol:

  • Wash: Machine wash cold with like colors. Turn the garment inside out to protect the artwork.

  • Iron: Never iron the design directly.
