THE ARTIFACT: THE SPORE PRINT

A naturalist pattern study of a mushroom spore print, radiating delicate, almost celestial rings that reveal the unseen architecture of the forest’s reproductive dust.
Centered on a dark, matte surface—a slate or deep charcoal tone—a circular pattern blooms in soft, powdery gradients. This is the spore print, rendered with naturalist pattern precision. Radiating outward from an invisible point where the mushroom cap once rested, the spores form delicate lines and rings, some evenly spaced, others irregular, like the fine markings of a fingerprint or the faint arms of a distant galaxy. The tones shift from off-white to pale tan or soft rust, echoing the hues of the original mushroom.
The pattern carries the memory of the gill or pore structure above: each line traces the path spores took as they fell, imprinting the geometry of the cap’s underside onto the flat plane below. The artist leans into this echo, emphasizing the symmetry and minor imperfections that make each print unique. Around the central ring, faint dusting extends further, where stray spores traveled beyond the main pattern. The background remains intentionally minimal, allowing the intricate radial design to hold the viewer’s full attention.

• Dry: Hang dry is preferred to "cure" the fit. Tumble dry on low if necessary.
• Iron: Never iron the design directly.
